Bespoke research services

GIC combines its existing research databases, industry knowledge and primary research capabilities to provide bespoke research services tailored to the requirements of individual clients. These vary widely depending on the interests of the client.

We have provided customised reports such as market forecasts, competitive intelligence, company, IP and technology due diligence and, most frequently, commercial model analysis.

Commercial model analysis is a specialist area for GIC; we track the manifold ways that companies generate revenues, and the mechanisms for customer conversion, establishing the dividing line and upselling mechanisms between free and premium content online, payment solutions and ARPU/ARPPU calculations.

We have written bespoke reports on the following sectors including:

Freemium commercial models
Community-driven gaming
Social network gaming
Mobile gaming
Virtual worlds
Casual massively multiplayer online games
Government support for games development
Outsourced games development
Centres of excellence for games development
Casual online gaming

CASE STUDY

The Raise the Game Report

Client: NESTA

Date: September-December 2008

Brief:  GIC was asked to profile the competitiveness of the UK versus Canada, France and Germany using key metrics such as scale and growth of development sector, talent pool, original IP generation, major companies and access to finance in each territory. GIC was also asked to update its list of government support for games development originally provided in Playing for Keeps for the British government. GIC was asked to profile the impact of tax credits and other support schemes on each territory, prepare competitive indicators for the UK studio sector and make recommendations for increasing the UK studio sector’s competitiveness.

Time frame: GIC had 8 weeks to prepare, draft, receive feedback to and then edit the report.

Deliverables: GIC delivered a 52 page report on time on budget. GIC also presented the report to a large group of industry and policy stakeholders at a launch event in December 2008.

Result: The report was covered widely in the national and trade press including national and trade media outlets such as the BBC, the Guardian, and Develop. NESTA subsequently backed up GIC’s recommendations by calling for fiscal support for games studios from government. NESTA has since funded a range of policy initiatives that stemmed from or were reinforced by the Raise the Game report. NESTA went on to recommission GIC to produce Time to Play in August 2009.
